Despite rallies and protests by students and faculty members, California State University trustees voted on Oct. 28 to raise fees throughout the 28-campus statewide system for the fourth consecutive year.
Undergraduate fees will increase in 2005 by $186. Next year’s total of $2520 in fees and tuition represents a rise of 76 percent (over $1000) since 2001. At the same time, fees for graduate students will go up by 10 percent, or $282.
The higher fees were expected under an agreement with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger that the state will provide more funding to the university system provided that students pay an increased percentage of education costs—not to exceed a 10 percent fee hike each year.
