About this site
A finding aid for Socialist Action, the paper of the US organisation of that name, not an edition of it.
What is here
The issues held by the Encyclopedia of Trotskyism On-Line up to February 2010: Vol. 1, No. 1 (December 1983), issued with an open letter to the membership of the Socialist Workers Party on the expulsions, then the monthly from January 1984 to December 1992, with an election supplement (July 1984) and supplements in September and November 1988 and January 1989 (Vol. 10, No. 7, July 1992, is missing from ETOL's run); and, after a gap, July, August, October, November and December 2009 and January and February 2010. The 2009–10 issues are the paper's own digital files, so their text is exact; their volume numbers are as printed, including the paper's own slips. ETOL has none of the issues of 1993 to June 2009, and no other scans of them are known to be online. For those years the archive has the paper's own web edition, as captured by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.
The archive ends with February 2010, the month of the Fourth International's sixteenth world congress. An epilogue gives the two documents the Permanent Revolution Faction submitted to the National Committee plenum of 6 October 2019, from the copies it circulated; most of the signers were expelled five days later.
The text
The scans of 1983–92 carry no text of their own. The text here was read from them in October 2026 by machine (macOS Vision, reading each column separately, with a whole-page reading to recover short lines such as by-lines), divided into articles by type size, and has not been corrected. Stories the paper continued on a later page ("continued on page 11") are linked to each other where the machine could match the two parts. For anything you quote, read the scan.
Credits
The scans were made by the Riazanov Library Digitization Project (Martin Goodman and Robin Palmer) from bound volumes lent by the Holt Labor Library, San Francisco, and are published by the Encyclopedia of Trotskyism On-Line on the Marxists Internet Archive. This site links to them there and hosts none. It is part of the Red Mole archives.
